By moving over an ion gun against an optical part, all under vacuum, this technology enables, under certain conditions, to operate on a resolution of the order of the nanometer in terms of thickness.
The implementation of this machining technology requires, among other things, a perfect knowledge of vacuum movements to manufacture an ion polishing system. In order to carry out an ion polishing on an optical part with a bend radius, the ion source must be moved by a multi-axis robot guaranteeing a uniform sweep of the entire surface to be treated.
